COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:
Integrating Services, Maximizing Resources
Dr Lopez and FAMU students look on as fellow interns present
Cultural Arts Natural Design International (CANDI) collaborates with the Greater Frenchtown Revitalization Council (GFRC), Great Recoveries (GR), Communities in Leon,Gadsden counties, and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) maximize community resources while providing here and now work experiences for the Masters of Public Health Interns. These collaborations allow the theory the interns learn in school to be applied to the practice they get in the field.
CANDI is a progressive arts organization, that provides opportunities to increase protective factors and reduce risk factors for marginalized youth and their families by showing alternate positive lifestyle choices. CANDI provides education and awareness to the community on domestic/intimate partner violence prevention, substance abuse, HIV, and Hepatitis C prevention, via the arts.
The Community Engagement: Integrating Services, Maximizing Resources project originated with the Greater Frenchtown Revitalization Council. Under the guidance of Miaisha Mitchell Executive Director of GFRC an organization that provides numerous services to the Tallahassee area known as Frenchtown and other surrounding counties. Qasimah Boston Interim Executive Director of Great Recoveries and doctorate student of Public Health at FAMU is another key partner in the collaborative. Interns are matched with community collaborative partners in the Community Engagement Project.
The students participate as Interns for their community engagement course. Dr. Lopez's insight and collaborative spirit has enabled a win win situation for the community. Interns spend their volunteer hours using these opportunities to participate in learning the grant writing process, attend national meetings, trainings and other relevant networking opportunities, with such agencies as Center for Disease Control (CDC) National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) Minority Alliance for Advocating Community Awareness and Action (MAACA), Florida Department of Health, and other local, national and international organizations.

integrative technological skills they have gained during their internship with CANDI under the Executive Director Joyce Brown. The interns are presenting the valuable time-saving websites online that millions of people use everyday to help take collaborations, marketing, professional development and social networking to a new level. Interns working with Ms. Brown on the CANDI Team are Jhetari Carney, Sejal Smith, Crystal Henderson (Team Lead) and Kristal Hall.
